June 14 - Ethan Rindner’s go-ahead home run with two outs in the sixth inning became the deciding factor for the BCC Patriots in a 3-2 win over the Molina Stars last night at Nike Park.

On a night dominated by pitching, Rindner broke a 2-2 tie with a solo blast to left field off Stars’ reliever Griffin Beliuau. Ridner, who was named Maryland’s 4A South Player of the Year after a stellar season at Churchill High School, found himself in a hitter’s count and ultimately delivered the big blow for his ballclub.

“It was a 3-1 count and I was just looking for one pitch, one spot,” Rindner said. “With two outs I was just trying to get something going, and he threw me that one pitch in the one spot.”

“He had an incredible high school season and it’s just carrying over to the summer,” Patriots’ coach Kyle Skellchock said. “We just had the right guy in the right spot.”

The Patriots took a 2-0 lead earlier in the game in the third inning after RBI from Zach Werkman and Dev Zoks. The Stars quickly answered in the bottom half scoring a pair of runs on a throwing error and wild pitch. Patriots reliever Ari Isaacson, who was charged with an earned run, managed to limit the damage despite three walks and an error in the inning.

12 total pitchers took the mound in the game as both coaches wanted to keep their rotations sharp for multiple games this weekend.

Danny Salisbury, Nathan Knowles and Chase Hill each threw a scoreless inning while Andrew Schaeb struck out five over two scoreless innings for the Stars. Nathan Williams surrendered a pair of runs on three hits in the third and Beliuau allowed the lone run in the sixth.

The Patriots countered with six pitchers of their own, holding the Stars to three hits and just one earned run. Henry Smith, Jesse Siegel, Werkman and Will Raymond combined for five scoreless innings and Bennett Solomon recorded the save with a scoreless seventh.

“Obviously when you are limiting your walks and men on-base each inning, you are setting yourself up for success,” Skellchock said. “We had a couple innings where we had three walks, so we did give them an opportunity, but staying away from the big inning helped us.”

The Stars will play their next NVTBL game against the NOVA Premier next Wednesday at Westfield High School while the Patriots will play next in a doubleheader against the Loudoun Aces Blue on Saturday back at Nike Park.
