April 12 - Zach Turk pitched four scoreless innings while Benny Lyons and Quincy Via drove in four runs to lead the Virginia Panthers 14u to an 8-0 win over the Mizuno Outlaws Green 14u last night at South County Middle School.

Turk started for the Panthers and held the Outlaws to three hits while striking out four. Panthers’ relievers Jack Conner, Garrett Hutchinson and Nicholas Feagan completed the shutout as they did not allow a hit in the final three frames.

“Zach gives you a chance to win every time he takes the bump,” Panthers’ coach Mike Owens said. “Good things happen when you throw strikes. Walks really hurt you in this league and when you have a good defense behind you and a catcher that can throw out runners, you’re going to be in ball games.”

The Panthers scored the game’s first run after Will Cavanaugh scored on a double steal with runners at first and third. Outlaws’ starting pitcher, Zach Boyle, allowed one run on two hits in four innings.

“[Boyle] threw strikes and had his breaking ball working pretty well,” Outlaws’ coach Kevin Wentworth said. “He struggled a bit mechanically, but he made all the adjustments he needed to make.”

The Panthers broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning off left-handed reliever Zach Paikin, capitalizing on three hits and a critical error with the bases loaded. After two more walks loaded the bases again, Lyons reached on an infield single that allowed two runs to cross the plate.

Bailey Resnick padded the Panthers’ lead in the seventh as he drove in a run on his third hit of the game, which was followed by a two-run triple from Via. Resnick reached bases all four times he came to the plate and steadily drove all three of his base hits to right field.

“You are going to get good results,” said Resnick on his opposite field approach.

Five errors and 12 walks ultimately was too much to overcome for the Outlaws, who trailed by just one run heading into the fifth inning.

“We just beat ourselves,” Wentworth said. "We played well, it was just that one inning. We just have to hone in on the little things.”

The Panthers will play next against the Virginia Cobras 14u on Sunday at Lake Braddock High School while the Outlaws will look to rebound against the Win Within Baseball 14u on Saturday at Guy Mason Recreation Center.
