Bravesbearcatspic smallSeptember 29 - Chris Ginn and Lyle Miller-Green combined to drive in six runs to pace the Braddock Bearcats over the Richmond Braves, 13-1, in a Premier Showcase League (PSL) matchup last night at Nottoway Park in Vienna.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, fueled by a two-run home run by Miller-Green. Ginn and Rojo Prarie each drove in a run in the second as the Bearcats added three more runs.

Ginn put the game out of reach in the third, connecting on a bases clearing double down the right field line after a long battle with Braves’ starter Robert Kelley. After a first inning strikeout, Ginn adjusted and with two strikes, choked up. It paid off, as he collected four RBI in his final two at-bats.

“I wanted to swing quicker and not exactly harder,” Ginn said. “I choked up a little bit, got to the ball a little quicker and was able to put it in play.”

“It’s something that I have started to do [with two strikes],” Ginn added. “I think it improves your average and you can get to the ball a lot quicker.”

The Bearcats added two more runs in the sixth after Will Reid’s third hit of the game and a triple from Peter Buschman, which scored Reid. The offense appeared to be more than comfortable digging in against the Braves’ pitchers, tallying 13 hits, five for extra bases.

“Once they get going, they really get in their comfort zone,” Bearcats’ coach Bobby Tiamson said. “That’s all I ask of these guys, to be relaxed when they hit.”

Five different pitchers for the Bearcats took the ball and limited the Braves to one run on seven hits. Rojo Prarie, Ryan Cuadros and Connor Glynn each pitched an inning, allowing one run in three innings.

Clifford Elder and Noah Adcock-Howeth did not allow a run in the final four innings for the Bearcats. Adcock-Howeth, who has a submarine-style release, was able to hold the Braves scoreless despite giving up three walks in the sixth and consecutive hits in the seventh.

“In my world, that’s the best type of pitcher to put in to end the game,” Tiamson said. “He reminds me of [Javier Lopez of the San Francisco Giants].”

Malik Koboa and Josh Kelley each had two hits for the Braves. On the mound, Kelley pitched the only two scoreless innings, recording four strikeouts. The lefty struck out the side in the fifth.

The Braves were forced to play with eight players after Grant Holzemer had to be removed from the game in the second inning after getting hit by a pitch. The Braves elected to play with two outfielders, which did not aid a defense that committed a number of critical errors.

“You can make mistakes but the mental mistakes we want to clear up,” Braves' coach Greg Knowles said. “We made a number of those but it’s a learning situation and that’s what the fall is for.”

Both teams will be in action again this Sunday with the Braddock Bearcats playing a doubleheader against the Potomac Cardinals at Lake Braddock High School, while the Richmond Braves will play a split doubleheader against the MVP Royals National and the MVP Royals East.
