Will Layton’s heroics at the plate and on the mound late in the final innings powered the Potomac Riverdogs Black 14u to a 6-5 comeback victory over the MVP Terps East 14u last night at Dulles Corner Park.

Layton tied the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning and later came around to score the winning run on a base hit from Dylan Logan. Layton also pitched a scoreless fourth inning as the Riverdogs’ bats came alive in the final two frames, recording five runs on five hits after trailing 5-1.

“Layton is probably our best hitter overall and is a solid pitcher that throws strikes,”’ Riverdogs coach Rajat Garg said. “He is also great in the field, plays a great shortstop and probably hits the ball the hardest consistently.”

Caleb Dickson opened the scoring for the Riverdogs, drawing a walk and scoring on an error in the first inning. The lead did not last long as Oliver Connell tied the game for the Terps with a base hit off Riverdogs starter Sid Saxena, who allowed one run over two innings with a pair of strikeouts. The Terps would then rally for four more runs in the third inning on a balk, RBI from Jayden Loveranes and two-run single from Tucker Forrest.

Reliever Austin Coleman was charged with all four runs in the third inning after Layton took over with the bases loaded and two outs. Layton allowed a couple of inherited runners to score on the base hit by Forrest, but that would be all the Terps would get.

The Riverdogs quickly answered the Terps’ outburst with three runs of their own in the third. Arin Garg and Coleman each had an RBI while Logan scored on a dropped fly ball hit by Saxena. The Riverdogs’ kept the momentum in their favor with a scoreless inning by Layton in the top of the fourth and a leadoff single by Myles Harris in the bottom half. Harris would come all the way around to score from first to tie the game on Layton’s double that set the table for Logan to drive in the winning run.

“Even down 5-1, we didn't quit,” Garg said. “We had good at-bats and got it to 5-4. We kept a good approach at the plate, [Harris] hustled down the first base line to beat the throw than [Layton] hit a line drive and got him in. Then again, a good approach by Dylan to hit something hard. We never quit.”

Both teams will be in action next on Sunday with the Riverdogs taking on the Sandy Spring Falcons while the Terps will play a doubleheader against the Arlington Senators National.
