The NVTBL and Premier Showcase League (PSL) hosted over a dozen college scouts from Division I & III schools from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. for a showcase workout and a pair of controlled games yesterday at South County Middle School.

Players from the Bradley Eagles, Metro Senators, MVP Royals and NOVA Premier PSL teams hit batting practice and competed in live action while recording data points like exit velocity off the bat, arm velocity and 60-yard times. The combination of the pro-style workout and game action allows each player to be seen while providing the opportunity to make a play and catch the right eye.

“It’s a great event and a great time of year, especially when college coaches are making final calls on my class. It’s great to have [the college coaches] out here,” said Ben Steel, a senior pitcher on the Bradley Eagles. “There is a lot of guys out here that can compete so it should be a good show today.”

The ability for players to be exposed to college coaches right in their backyard not only provides tremendous value for each player in their recruiting process, but also for the local programs who came out. Coaches also were given GPA and SAT/ACT test scores for each player, allowing the higher academic schools to narrow their search based on their requirements.

“This event is great because it’s not too far for us and I get to see four different teams,” said Mary Washington coach Kelly Swiney. “I like to be able to see the showcase part and the game. A lot of times we are just going to showcases, which can be tough because you don’t get to see them in a game.”

“Those of us who are high academic can look through and zone in because we have the info in our hands and we can focus on the kids we need to focus on,” said Georgetown coach Pete Wilk. “Anything Andy [Bradley] does is going to be done well. It’s organized, it flows, we got the information right when we stepped on the property. I don’t know if we would be here if it wasn’t so convenient. There is a lot going on this time of year and I personally don’t live too far so it was fairly easy for me to come down.”
