It didn’t matter what side of the plate Justin Riemer or Casey Gibbs hit from, balls flew all over the yard as they helped power the DC Cadets to a 14-7 win over the MVP Royals National in a PSL matchup last night at South Lakes High School.

The Royals’ pitching staff failed to retire the pair of switch-hitters as they went a combined five-for-five with two walks in the game. In the third inning, Riemer and Gibbs contributed to a 10-run rally with hits from both sides of the plate to help the Cadets overcome a 7-1 deficit.

Riemer led off the game with a base hit and later scored on an RBI from Hunter DiCello to give the Cadets a momentary lead. The Royals quickly took back the momentum and answered with seven runs over the next two frames. Garret O’Connor and Ryan Wilson each drove in a pair of runs while Evan Mills and Jack Brennan also each had an RBI for the Royals.

Right-hander Nick Moshos kept the Cadets’ offense at bay through the first two innings, allowing a run on three hits with two strikeouts. The second time through the order, the Cadets were able to get to Moshos for five runs (four earned) on four hits in the third inning. Left-hander Jack Brennan came on in relief and finally recorded the third out, but not before surrendering four runs on four hits.

“The second time around we started to have a better approach at the plate,” Cadets coach Tony Pizzola said. “They were a little out in front the first time through, but the second time around they kept their weight back and as you can see, hit the ball all over the field.”

Riemer and Gibbs sparked the rally with a pair of extra base hits from the left side of the plate, then switched over to the right side against the left-hander and drove in three more runs to cap the 10-run third. Pranav Rane also drove in two runs in the inning as he finished the night 2-for-3 with three RBI.

“It just seemed like we started to attack fastballs early and once we started to attack and being aggressive in the box, we started making good contact. One thing led to another and we had ourselves a good inning,” Riemer said.

The Cadets needed to go to their bullpen with just two outs in the first inning, but right-hander Xan Wojie maneuvered a bases loaded jam and allowed two runs (one earned) over 1.1 innings. Rane entered in the third inning and provided a shutdown inning after the big Cadets’ rally with a pair of strikeouts.

The Cadets added four more runs in the fourth, but due to time constraints, the game ended in the top of the fourth inning. Both teams will square off again next Wednesday at Langley High School.
